Afternoon on the Danforth: Souv Like & La Diperie

We decided to go grab a bite to eat on the Danforth one weekend, happened to be on of the hottest days EVER.  And yes, I'm catching up on my blogging, so this is a late post.  Life happens right?

I read that Souvlike has great authentic Greek gyros, at a good price, means I must go since theres one, no good Greek places uptown, and two good price!!!  When I got there, I was kinda surprised, it was a tiny place right across from Pape station.  My friend who used to frequent that location, said she's never even noticed it before but its been there a while.  We ordered a pork gyro and a chicken gyro.  Finally a place that puts french fries in the gyros, just like in Greece!  The gyro meats were seasoned well, and huge portions stuffed into that fresh fluffy pita bread.  I could eat this stuff for days!  This is the kind of place I like, a hole in the wall that makes AMAZING food.  No need for fancy restaurants for me...... well most of the time at least.

La Diperie
It's the freaking hottest day of the year, or at least it seems so to me.  So what do we need?  Cold cold ice cream.  Noticed this Montreal chain (from some place on the internet, most likely BlogTO or Yelp or something), and figured no better day to try it.  La Diperie does dipped soft serve cones.  They have a large variety of flavours for you to choose from, from regular milk chocolate to lavender dip.  I played it safe and went with a milk chocolate dip.  I was feeling boring that day.  I'm not sure if it was because it was hot, but my cone just didn't look so good.  The chocolate seemed not to solidify/stick to the cone.  Worth the money?  Definitely not.  The cone was small, so not worth it portion wise, think $1 Ikea cone size.

Tsujiri

Yes, Tsujiri has been open a while now.  But I really didn't want to wait in the super long lines for a some ice-cream.  So I waited this long to go give it a try, thinking that the lines would have died down or dissipated completely.  I was wrong, very wrong.  The lineup was still out the door.  This place must be amazing right?  As I was waiting in line for my ice-cream, I realized why the lineups for this place was so long, the store front is REALLY badly designed.  The store is super narrow, there isn't enough room for seating, lining up to go inside to order, and then waiting around for your order.  After I placed my order for a Shiratama parfait (matcha), I snagged one of their three 2 seater booths.  Once I sat down, I was reminded again how narrow the storefront was.  People that were lining up kept leaning on me or the table..... I was super annoyed.

After several minutes, my order number was finally called.  The parfait was smaller than I expected.  Ice-cream had good strong matcha flavour, but was a bit chalky.  The red bean mash/paste was good, sweet, but good accompanying the strong matcha flavour.  Overall, it was ok, not sure it was worth $9, or the lineup, or having people lean on me while i'm trying to enjoy my dessert.  Maybe if I got takeout, it would have been better?

Ginggrae Red Ginseng Ice Cream

While waiting for friends to arrive at our restaurant meeting place for dinner, we decided to go check out the Korean supermarket right next door.  We were early.  My goal whenever going to ethnic supermarkets is to find strange foods, but normal enough for me to want to try.  I stumbled across Red Ginseng ice cream.  I like ginseng, and I like ice cream, should be good right?

First problem, after I get home and about to dig into the ice cream.  I notice the ice cream is expired for a month or so.  Oh well, too far to complain about $1 ice cream.

Second problem, no ginseng smell at home, but when you put that first bite into your mouth, you get whacked in the face with bitterness.

Third problem, all the bites after have no ginseng flavour.
